Registered Nurse Emergency Department/ Room (ER)

Emergency Department (ED)
The ED Staff RN is responsible for delivery of nursing care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department with various illnesses, injuries and afflictions including acute coronary syndrome, stroke, psychiatric disturbances, surgical maladies, and others. This position will require excellent triage skills, sound clinical judgment, excellent people skills and experience. The ED Staff RN will triage, perform phlebotomy, and start IVs when indicated. Responsibilities include ongoing assessment and treatment of conditions, administration, and titration of cardio-active medications, ACLS as indicated as well as various invasive monitoring modalities, transportation of patients to various units within the hospital and code team responsibilities. The ED Staff RN should have the expectation of being oriented to the flow of the unit but should be prepared to function as a fully integrated and experienced Nurse. This position will require standing and walking for extended periods of time as well as hearing and vision correct to the near normal range. The position will require the full range of motion and the manual finger dexterity and hand eye coordination to facilitate multiple IV starts and ability to access long term venous access devices. This position is not open to novice nurses.

Basic Requirements:

  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience:

Emergency Department

  • Associate Degree or Diploma with two (2) to three (3) years of successful Emergency or critical care nursing practice – Required
  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing – Preferred
  • ED or critical care nursing experience – Preferred
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a team member and leader – Preferred
  • Highly effective interpersonal, organizational skills, verbal, and written communication skills – Preferred
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification – Preferred
  • National Certification such as in Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN), Medical-Surgical Nursing (RN-BC), Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – Preferred

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

  • Nurse I Level I – An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II – An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor’s degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III – An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master’s degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements:
Incumbent must possess the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment. Physical requirements include visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. May involve potentially long periods of lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, and repeated bending. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Safe patient handling equipment is provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive, sit and/or ride in GSA vehicles for long periods of time.

In-direct patient care work is mostly sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to complete the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items such as patient records and supplies. In-direct care staff may be assigned to work in direct care areas as needed.

Registered Nurse Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)
The SICU Staff RN provides hands on direct experience caring for critically ill vascular and general surgical patients who have undergone complex surgical procedures. The RN will be an expert in the post-operative care arena, providing cardiac and pulmonary support, frequent physical assessments, lab evaluations, blood and blood products, titration of cardioactive medications, ongoing cardiac and pulmonary artery monitoring, pain control, EKG interpretation, continuous renal replacement therapy and complex dressing changes. The RN should have superior critical thinking skills to prevent or respond to emergency situations; to correctly interpret and verify physician orders; to investigate abnormal situations; and to respond appropriately in clinical emergencies. This position is not open to novice nurses.

Medical Assistant

Duties

  • Performs data entry, updates and verifies demographic information, no-show information.
  • Schedules appointments and collects insurance information.
  • Initiates and carries out a variety of administrative duties in support of patient care.
  • Responsible for checking patients in upon arrival.
  • Coordinates with team members to assure that patients are seen at their scheduled time within the clinic setting.
  • Processes new enrollees and transfer patients by using Register Once, when needed.
  • Contacts the travel office to arrange necessary transportation following established guidelines.
  • Responding to incoming telephone inquiries and providing follow-up confirmation calls are completed.
  • Entering no show information and appropriately documenting efforts as needed in Computerized Patient Record Systems (CPRS).

Experience and Education:

(1) Experience: Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR
(2) Education: One year above high school; OR (3) Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
